Loving God. Growing Faith. Serving Others.
The ABC's of Christ Church
Core values express “why we do what we do.” We believe these values reflect the character of Jesus, and we want them to characterize our church as we fulfill our mission and ministries.
Authentic relationships --We believe it takes a church to raise a Christian. We value depth of relationships and conversation. We believe the church can be a safe space to be honest about life and the spiritual journey in times of struggle and times of joy. Lasting life change happens best where real friendships can be developed in a caring community.
Compassion -- Jesus cared deeply about people, especially those who were poor, lonely, mistreated, hungry, and sick. We believe compassion for others in need means putting flesh and blood on the gospel by treating people in need with gentleness and respect. As we live to serve others, lives are transformed, including our own.
Creativity -- God created human beings in God’s image. We believe creativity is one way to reflect the Creator’s design. We seek to create a worship space that connects with the souls of the worshipers while finding ministry venues that express the creative gifts of our community.
Diversity -- We value the beauty of God’s world, and we desire to foster a church culture with a rich diversity of ages, life stages, and backgrounds. In Christ, we are united by a common humanity, not only specific ethnic, economic or cultural lines.
Gratitude and Generosity -- We are called to love generously and live fully. This happens best when we respond to God’s generous gifts of life and being. We respond to God’s generosity with gratitude and likewise offer God’s generosity to others. We agree with theologian Karl Barth that “gratitude follows grace like thunder lightning.” Generosity is the fruit of gratitude, and we are called to share with each other and the world.
Hospitality -- Since all people are created in the image of God, we believe all people are worthy to be welcomed as we would welcome Christ. We seek to foster an atmosphere of warmth and acceptance for both newcomers and members to feel a sense of belonging.
Lifelong learning -- As with any close friendship, friendship with God deepens over time through loving care and attention. We never stop learning, growing and developing as friends and followers of Jesus. Lifelong learning means committing to be faithful students of the Bible who seek to understand what the Bible says and live what the Bible means.
Lifelong teaching -- Mentoring relationships are important in passing down the legacy of our faith. We encourage gifted leaders to invest their time and talents in equipping others to grow more deeply in the Christian life including: biblical teaching, prayer, friendship, and serving others.
Ministry is for everybody--We believe all men and women have unique gifts for all areas of ministry. Whether single, married, young, old, male or female, we seek to be a church that helps all people discover their natural talents and spiritual gifts in order to enjoy making a difference in the church and the world.
Preaching and Communion (Word and Table) -- The earliest Christian communities devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching. We value narrative preaching that engages both the heart and the mind with practical effect through faithful interpretation of the Bible, storytelling, pastoral imagination and the freedom of the Spirit.
Local and global impact -- We believe Christ died for everybody in the world. Thus, we are called to care for the people Christ cares about. Taking meaningful action may include tutoring elementary school children, building Habitat for Humanity houses, serving meals to the hungry, writing a letter to someone in prison, reaching out to people with addictions, partnering with groups to affect economies and standards of living around the world, digging wells to provide clean water in remote areas, and providing food and medicine for people who need them.
Tradition -- A faithful worshiping community values the old as well as the new. Our worship is informed by the Spirit’s work through Christian tradition across the centuries and the best of our Baptist heritage. We are committed to a meaningful integration of Scripture, prayers, proclamation, storytelling, music, baptism and Communion, and the celebration of the Christian church calendar.
